ZWART & WIT

Tropen Museum Amsterdam 2013/'14

Who is black and who is white? Who actually determines this? And what does the slavery past have to do with this? 150 years after the abolition of slavery, the Tropenmuseum will invite visitors to engage in discussion, with each other and with themselves in the exhibition Black & White.

We used two overlaying screens: a green and red to create a fake ‘black’, in reality a sepia, the color of most images shown from the archive. The green red and black stand for the Black Independent colors as well. The 3 quotes are part of the 10 quotes used in the exhibition’s discussion around being ‘black’ or ‘white’. A fourth poster about Black Piet was censored. Isn’t that ironic?
